Breaking up videos into seperate video files (Windows)

  1. Put your video into your Pictures folder (in Windows Explorer)
  2. Open your Photos app, and click “Video Editor”
  3. Click the blue box “New Video Project,” and when prompted give your video a name like “Week 3 lecture part 1”
  4. In the Project Library, click “+ Add” and choose “From my Collection”
  5. Pick the video you want to split and click “Add” (upper right)

  6. Click and drag the thumbnail image of your video from the Project Library to the Storyboard area
  7. Click the “Split” button
  8. Click on the slider (it looks like a blue push pin) and drag it to the point where you would like to your video to be split into two pieces (if you want to split it into more pieces, just start by dragging the slider to the first point where you want “part 1” to end).  Note that you can click on the left right arrows (lower left of the window) to move the slider approximately frame by frame.  Click “Done” when you are ready to split your video.
  9. In the Storyboard area, you’ll notice that there are now two seperate videos.  Right click on one on the right hand side and click “Remove this video clip.”  What we are doing now is saving the first video.  Don’t worry, the rest of your video has not actually been deleted.
  10. Click “Finish video” from the upper right hand corner of the window.

  11. Click Export
  12. Navigate to the place you’d like to save the finished first part to be saved, and click “Export.”  This may take some time to save.
  13. To create the second part of your video, return to the Photos app, and click on the “Trim” button.
  14. You’ll see a window that looks very similar to the one where you Split your clip, but below the line that that has the slider are a pair of blue colored squares connected to the slider line.  Click and drag the left-most block until it’s touching the right-most block.
  15. Now drag the right blue block all the way to right of the slider OR, if you are splitting your video into more than 2 pieces, to the place where you’d like “part 2” to end.

  16. Click “Done”
  17. Click “Finish video” from the upper right hand corner of the window.
  18. Click Export
  19. Navigate to the place you’d like to save the finished first part to be saved, and click “Export.”  This may take some time to save.
  20. If you are breaking your video up into more than two pieces, return to the Photos app, and repeat the process of Trimming.
