Check for updates manually

  1. Click the Apple menu and then 'Software Update.' Software Update will search for new updates.
  2. A dialogue box will appear.  If it tells you that there are no updates are available, your system is up-to-date. Otherwise, it will prompt you to install them.
  3. If you are running a newer version of Mac OS, you will need to click 'Show Details' to view the list of updates.  A description of the update appears if it is selected in the list. This list is helpful if you need to check whether a specific update requires installation.
  4. Check the boxes next to the updates you wish to install (unless you a specific reason not to, leave them all checked). Click 'Install items' (or 'Continue' if the list is hidden)   .

Schedule your Mac to automatically check for updates

To make sure that automatic updates is enabled, click on the  Apple icon and select ' System Preferences.' Under the ' System' heading, click  'Software Updates.' You should now see the screen below.

  

Make sure that the  Check for updates box is checked. Choose how often you would like to check for updates, and then check the  Download important updates automatically check box. This ensures that your system will automatically keep itself up to date. When you are finished, close the window.
