Network/Wi-Fi registration for some computers/devices

Who this is for:

  • Students, staff, and faculty members.

This article explains how to prepare to connect your computer or device to the Whitman network when either:

  • Your computer/device uses a cable (instead of Wi-Fi) to connect to the internet/network.
    OR

  • Your device needs to connect to the Whitman_Devices Wi-Fi network.

For devices that have no web browser

  1. Locate your device’s MAC address (if you don’t know how, google the “find MAC address for [name of your technology].” Make a note of the MAC address.

  2.  Fill out the  Manual Device Registration form on a separate device that does have a web browser Follow the steps found next in “For devices that have a web browser.”

For devices that do have a web browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.) 

  1. Locate your device’s MAC address (if you don’t know how, google the “find MAC address for [name of your technology].” Make a note of the MAC address.

  2. Plug in your network cable (if applicable). If your device does not use a Wi-Fi connection and instead relies on a cable (“ethernet cable”), make sure you have plugged in the cable to your device and to the source providing the connection (examples: a router, a jack on the wall, etc.).

  3. Open a web browser.

  4. Go to whitreg.whitman.edu

  5. Select the option that fits your situation:

    1. “Register this computer or device…”

    2. “Register a different computer or device…” – this is the option to use when you are registering a separate device that has no web browser. 

  6. If prompted login using your Whitman username (without “@whitman.edu”) and password

  7. Fill in the request form. A few tips:

    1. Description: fill in what kind of device you are using

    2. Campus Phone: if you don’t have one, please use your mobile number

    3. Connection Type: If your device connects to the internet/network over Wi-Fi, choose “Wireless.” If it connects via a cable, choose “Wired.”

    4. Network Hardware Address: This is the MAC address you looked up earlier; provide this information in this field.

  8. Click/tap “Submit Registration.” You will be notified by email when your registration is complete.
