Introduction
Whitman College provides a VPN server for administrative staff that allows you to securely connect to our internal network over the internet. This would allow you to potentially gain access to services such as Datatel or Millennium while off campus.
*Note* A VPN connection to Whitman College will not work in all locations. Some hotels, wireless hot spots and some Internet Service Providers use older firewalls, routers and wireless access points the do *NOT* support the required "Cisco IP/VPN passthrough (IPSec/L2TP)" and so the VPN connection to Whitman College will fail.
You need to contact Kevin Kelly (kelly@whitman.edu) to request a VPN account and to receive the "group password" need to log into our server.
Configure the Mac OS X VPN Client
In your Finder, click the 
icon, then choose System Preferences...
Once in System Preferences, click the Network icon.
In the Network screen, click the + on the bottom left to add a new network connection.
When presented with the Interface selection, choose "VPN." The next choice, VPN Type, should be set to "Cisco IPSec" and the Service Name to "Whitman VPN".
For the VPN Setting, set Server Address to "74.85.64.130" and Account Name to your Whitman username. You can leave Password blank for now.
Click Show VPN status in menu bar checkbox.
Next, click on Authentication Settings...
Select Shared Secret for authentication type, enter the "group password" you received from kelly@whitman.edu in theShared Secret field, and "whitmanvpn" for the Group Name.
Click OK to save this value, then Apply on the next screen to save your configuration.
Connecting to the VPN and verifying VPN IP address
Connect your computer to the VPN
Locate and click the VPN icon in the menu bar, then click "Connect Whitman VPN." You will then be prompted for your VPN username and password.
NOTE: You cannot paste your VPN password into this box. If you'd like to change your VPN password so it is easier to type, please contact kelly@whitman.edu.
Verifying your VPN IP address
You can use your web browser to open the following web page:
The web page should look like thw following and your IP address should be 10.20.2.xx where "xx" and a number from 1 to 253.
Disconnecting from the VPN
Locate and click the VPN icon in the menu bar, then click "Disconnect Whitman VPN.
